- environmentalIndonesiaRECOFTC Community Forestry 2023-2028The Asia-Pacific region, which is at the forefront of modern global development, is becoming more economically integrated, as well as more closely linked through a complex web of roads, rail, hydropower dams, economic zones, energy grids, natural resource exploitation, and agricultural supply chains. This creates economic opportunities for communities, countries, and beyond, but it also carries unsettling risks. Moreover, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the region is facing increased social, economic, and environmental challenges, putting additional pressure on vulnerable groups. The unsustainable exploitation of forest landscapes in the region takes place amongst opaque governance mechanisms and financial interests. Forests in the region are threatened by each of these trends and related trade-offs, but forests are a big part of the solutions too. Forest regulate ecosystems, protect biodiversity, play an important role in the carbon cycle, stabilize the climate, support livelihoods, and can help drive sustainable growth. When a forest is managed sustainably, it can significantly improve the resilience of both ecosystems and societies. To continue its work in forest landscapes and to meet those needs and challenges, RECOFTC developed the Strategic Plan 2023-2028, which aims to contribute to positive outcomes for people, forests, and ecosystems in RECOFTC focal countries and priority landscapes through progress toward four linked goals related to climate change, gender…

- environmentalTanzaniaNEMC and VPO Environment Capacity Building Program (2019 - 2025)The government has taken a bold step to protect and conserve the environment by putting in place policy and legislative instruments through the National Environment Policy (1997) and the Environmental Management Act (EMA) (2004). The Act puts in place an administrative and institutional framework for environmental management that cuts across all levels of government administration that includes line ministries and local government authorities. EMA further outlines various environmental management tools such as Environmental Assessments, Environmental Standards and economic instruments. In addition the Act makes provision for the development and promulgation of regulations, guidelines and rules for effective implementation of the Act. Despite these efforts, there are still a number of challenges and gaps among responsible institutions and actors with regard to fully implementation of the EMA. These include among others, incompleteness or non-formulation of some of the regulations and guidelines, inadequate institutional capacity in sector ministries and local government authorities to implement the Act, and low awareness by the general public on their roles and responsibilities in implementing EMA. This therefore calls for a deliberate need to address the articulated challenges to foster effective implementation of the EMA. The proposed project aims at enhancing the national capacity for implementing the Environmental Management Act for sustainable environmental management in…
